Valencia L. Stephens, MD.

Dr. Valencia Stephens is a native of the Midwest. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and traveled to Ohio State University in Columbus for her Doctor of Medicine degree. Dr. Stephens returned to Michigan for her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Henry Ford Health Systems in Detroit.

Dr. Stephens began private practice in suburban Michigan. While practicing there, she was an active member of the Fetal Infant Mortality Review Committee in Oakland County. This committee meets once a month to review deaths of babies and unborn children and creates recommendations that could help prevent such deaths in the future. Dr. Stephens was also active in the faculty program at North Oakland Medical Center and was a teaching physician for the Family Practice and OB/Gyn residency programs. Teaching residents and medical students helps a clinician stay current in her field, and this was no exception for Dr. Stephens. In addition, she also voluntarily recertifies for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology by taking a yearly exam rather than the required 6 year recertification.

Dr. Stephens relocated to Arizona in December of 2006 in order to escape the cold weather. She has practiced in the east valley for 4 years. She is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Midwestern University College of Medicine in Glendale as well as a Preceptor at A.T. Still University College of Medicine in Gilbert. Through these programs, she lectures and precepts students for their women’s health rotation. She was also actively involved in clinical research studies with Star W research in Chandler as a clinical study investigator. This research makes it possible to gather the much needed information for new drugs to become approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The central thread in Dr. Stephens’ career has been education and teaching, and this is evident in her approach to patient care. Dr. Stephens believes that long term health can only be achieved through patient education and lifestyle changes. Her interests include abnormal uterine bleeding, abnormal pap smears, weight management and obstetrical care.

She spends her free time reading, hiking and spending time with her dog, Sadie, a very affectionate cocker spaniel. She also loves to travel, both across the state and across the world. Some of her favorite recent travels include: Rome, Paris, St. Maarten, and the Dominican Republic.
